“How many millimeters can you make my double eyelids?”
“My friend got her’s 8mm and it looks great. Can I also get 8mm?”
These days, a lot of patients who come to consult about double eyelid surgery ask these kinds of questions.
Does getting the same thickness of double eyelids look the same for everyone?
Here is my answer : wanting to get the same thickness based on someone else’s result is a very dangerous decision.
Sometimes we tell patients thickness length for reference, but there are so many factors that must be taken into account like how your eyelids are when your eyes are close. Also the measurement is taken differently depending on whether you are laying down, sitting down, closing your eyes tightly shut or lightly shut, etc.
Moreover, even with eyelids of the same thickness the result can look very different depending on multiple factors like thickness of eyelid skin, eye opening mechanics, eye width, eye projection, eyebrows and its bone structure, position of eyeball, and whether you have epicanthus or not.
A person who can open his or her eye wide open with eash, and have thin eyelid skin, then a double eyelid of 10mm or more may look natural. But on the other hand, someone who cannot open eyes without ease due to weak eye opening mechanics and has thick eyelid skin, a double eyelid of below 6mm can even look unnatural. The same measurement double eyelids of someone with protruding eyeballs can look bigger, whereas those of someone with sunken eyes may look smaller.
Each individual has different muscle strength of opening the eyes, skin thickness, positioning of eyes to the facial bones, length between the eyes, and so on. So the “Xmm of someone else’s double eyelid” is not a good standard for your own surgery goals.
You should get the doctor to check your eyes first, and make a careful decision for your surgery plan based on your own specific situation.
