Rhinoplasty in Korea: The Basics

Overview of rhinoplasty in Korea

Our blog focuses on types of medical care and questions people have about the health system in Korea. However, we haven’t forgotten about plastic surgery and its popularity here, for Koreans and foreigners alike. As we mentioned in an earlier post, Korea consistently has one of the highest number of plastic surgeries performed per capita, which is remarkable for such a small country. There are so many possible procedures offered in this field. We can’t possibly talk about them all, we decided to start with one of the most common ones: rhinoplasty in Korea, or plastic surgery to change the shape of the nose.

Is it just me, or do other people think of this when you hear “rhinoplasty”?

What is rhinoplasty?

According to Dr. H, who works at Yonsei Severance Hospital, rhinoplasty is not just common, but also one of the most standard plastic surgery procedures performed, given the limited number of things you can do to the nose. The main types can be divided based on the nose you currently have, which determines what kind of procedure(s) you’ll need (Source: Seoul Touch Up):

  • Bulbous nose
  • Hooked nose
  • Deviated nose
  • Short nose
  • Long nose

Though the type of nose you would like to have depends on the type of nose you currently have, there are still certain procedures that are more popular than others. People generally consider certain features to be more “attractive,” in a conventional sense.

One is the “Korean Nose Lift,” which involves building up the nose bridge to make it higher. It can also include and sometimes changing the shape of the tip of your nose. If you’re a non-Asian foreigner, you’ve probably heard people here complimenting your nose height. Or if you don’t speak Korean, well, now you know what they were talking about. Or you had gochujang all over your face and didn’t realize it. Either one.

How popular is rhinoplasty in Korea?

According to 2015 data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty was the second most popular kind of plastic surgery performed in the country. This is the most recent data that includes Korea:Graph of types of surgery, including rhinoplasty in Korea

Even compared to other big countries where plastic surgery is popular — the U.S. and Brazil — Korea performed more rhinoplasty surgeries that year than BOTH of them! That’s right, Korea had the most number of rhinoplasty surgeries worldwide. And this is compared to two giant countries with huge populations. Well played, Korea, well played.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty in Korea?

Though it is a “standard” procedure compared to other plastic surgeries, your potential surgery depends on many factors. This even includes your price range. The more work you want done, the more it will cost. This is true even though the cost is much cheaper in Korea than other countries.

When it comes to choosing the type of procedure you want, you’ll need to consult with a doctor. It’s important to make sure the care you receive matches your needs. Also, if you would like to correct internal problems in your nose, we can help with that too! We know it’s a daunting prospect, especially when it comes to something like changing part of your face.
